The Future of Analog IC Technology
DESCRIPTION
The MP4603 is an inte grated white LED driver.
It uses MPS’s patent- pending technology to
drive the backlights for LCD TVs measuring 60 -
inches or la rger, for LE D string volt ages up to
350V. This novel techn ology can leverage the
LED drive power by regulating o nly a small
portion of the LED dri ve voltage—together with
a fixed high -voltage source, a low-voltage LED
driver can drive high voltage LED strings. This
method allo ws for a super-high po wer density,
higher efficiency and lo wer cost du e to the low
voltage stre ss, hig her switching fr equencies,
and smaller passive components.
The MP46 03 is a current-mode–controlled
buck-boost regulator. With a 12V input V INL and
a high voltage source V INH, it can deliver a
regulated voltage (V INH to V INH+68V) to drive a
LED string with up to 100 LEDs. I t c an drive an
external switch in serie s with the LED string to
achieve over 1:1000 dimming ra tio. Analog
dimming ca n be applie d at the same time to
further improve the
dimming ratio. Fault
protections include LED open-string protection,
output short-circuit pro tection, cycle-by-cycle
peak current limiting, and thermal shutdown.
The MP4603 is availab le in TSSOP16-EP and
SOIC16 packages.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
The MP460 3 is a buck-boost LE D driver. It s
novel power leverage control technolo
gy
provides a highly efficient, low-cost solution for
LCD TV L ED drivers. It has a high bus voltage
and a low supply voltage (typically 12V or 24V,
up to 60V) to drive
LED bac klight strin gs
of >350V f or LCD T Vs measuring 60-inch or
more.
Setting the LED Current
An external resistor (RFB) sets the maximum LED
current as per:

This equat ion applies to a programmable
frequency range between 200kHz and 2MHz.
If FST pin is floating or RFST exceeds 400k , the
switching fr equency is set to default value of
0.9MHz.
Setting the Slope Compensation
The MP4 603 empl oys peak-current–mode
control, which needs slope compensation t o
avoid sub-harmonic oscillat ion when the dut y
cycle exceeds 50%.
The current loop has e ffective sen se resistan ce
of 0.4 . Given a desired input/o utput voltage
relationship, estimate t he sense current ramp-
down slope as:

Ensuring current loop stability requires a
compensation slope of at least half of the ramp-

If SLOPE pin is float ing or R SLOPE exceeds
400k, the slope compensation is set to defau lt

Selecting the Inductor
The input voltage, output voltage, and LED
current fact or into indu ctor sele ction. In additio n,
select the inductor so that th e circuit always
operates in continuous current mode (CCM).
Estimate the inductor value using the following
equation:

Selecting the Input Capacitor
The input capacitor red uces the surge current
drawn from the input supply and the switching
noise from the device. Use ceramic capacitors
with X5R or X7R dielectrics because they have
low ESR values and small temperature
coefficients. Select a sufficiently-large
capacitance to limit the input voltage ripple
(VIN), which is normally less than 5%-10% of the
DC value.
