The Future of Analog IC Technology
DESCRIPTION
The MP4600 is an inte grated white LED driver.
It can be applied with MPS pat ent pending
technology to drive up to 55 inch LCD TV
backlighting, in which the LED string voltage
can be up t o 300V. Th e novel technology can
leverage the LED drive power by regulating
only a small part of the LED drive voltage. As a
result, wor king togeth er with a fixed hig h
voltage source, a low voltage LED driver can be
used to drive the high voltage LED strings with
super high power density, high efficiency and
low cost du e to the lo w voltage stress, hig h
switching f requency, and smalle r size of
passive components.
MP4600 is a current mode con trolled buck-
boost regulator. With a 12V input V INL and a
high voltage source VINH, it can deliver a
regulated voltage (V INH to V INH+43V) to drive a
LED str ing with up t o 8 5 LED s. It i ncorporates
both DC and PWM dimming onto a sing
le
control pin. Fau lt pr otection in cludes LED open
strings pr otection, output sh ort cir cuit pro tection,
input over voltage protection, cycle-by-cycle peak
current limiting, and thermal shutdown.
The MP4600 is ava ilable in 10-pin 3x3mm QFN
packages.

OPERATION
The MP460 0 is a curre nt mode controlled Buck-
Boost regulator. The se nsing resistor senses t he
LED current and feed s it ba ck to an error
amplifier, which regulat es it to 19 8mV with a n
inside compensation network. The COMP pin is
the output of the error amplifier. The induct or
peak current is proportional to the COMP pin
voltage. An increase of the COMP
voltage
increases the current delivered to the output.
Open LED Protection
If the LED is open, ther e is no volta ge on the F B
pin. The du ty cycle will increase u ntil V DD- V SS
reaches to 55V or V OVP-VSS reaches the
shutdown threshold set by the external resistor.
The top switch will turn off until the voltage V DD-
VSS and VOVP-VSS decreases sufficiently.
Dimming Control
The MP4600 allows both DC and PWM dimming.
When the voltage on EN is <0.6V, the chip is
turned off. For analog dimming, when the voltage
on EN is from 0.7V to 1.4V, the LED current will
change fro m 0% to 10 0% of the maxi mum LED
current. If t he voltage on EN pin is higher tha n
1.4, maximum LED current will be g enerated. For
PWM dimming, its amplitude (VDIM – VINGND) must
exceed 1.5V. The PW M waveform is intern ally
clamped to 0.198V.
