3V-18V, 1A-5A Programmable-Current-
Limit Switch with Over-Voltage Clamp
DESCRIPTION
The MP5010B is a protection device designed t o
protect circuitry on the output (source) from
transients o n the input (V CC). It als o protects the
input from undesired shorts a nd transie nts
coming from the source.
A small capacitor on the dv/dt pin controls the
slew rate t hat limit th e inrush current at the
source. For instance, a 1nF capacitor results in a
source ramp-up time of 3ms.
The maxi mum load at the source is curren t
limited usin g a sense F ET topology. An extern al
resistor bet ween the I-Limit pin and the Source
pins controls the magnitude of the current limit.
An internal charge pump drives the gate of the
power device, allowing t he DMOS p ower FET t o
have a very low ON-resistance of just 40mΩ.
The MP5010B also prot ects the so urce from th e
input being too low or too high. Under-volta ge
lockout ensures that th e input remains above t he
minimum o perating threshold befo re the power
device turns on. If the input rises ab ove the hig h
output threshold, the MP5010B limits the sour ce
voltage.

The Enable/Fault line must remai n above the
MID level for the output to turn ON.
The fault flag is an inter nal flip-flop that can b e
set or reset under the following conditions:
1. Thermal Shutdown: set fault flag
2. Under-Voltage: reset fault flag
3. LOW on Enable/Fault pin: reset f ault
flag
4. MID on Enable/Fault pin: no effect
Given a fau lt, the Enable/Fault pin is driven to
MID.
There are 4 types of faults, and each fault has a
direct and indirect effect on the Enable/Fault pin
and the internal fau lt flag. In a typical
application there are one or more of th e
MP5010B c hips in a system. The Enable/Fault
lines are typically be connected together.
