DESCRIPTION
The MP456 1 is a h igh f requency step -down
switching re gulator w ith integrated in ternal h igh-
side high v oltage p ower MOSFET. It provides
1.5A output with current mode control for fast loop
response and easy compensation.
The wide 3.8V to 55V input range accommodates
a var iety of st ep-down ap plications, including
those in aut omotive inp ut environm ent. A 12µA
shutdown mode su pply current allows use in
battery-powered applications.
High pow er co nversion ef ficiency over a wid e
load range is ac hieved b y sc aling do wn th e
switching f requency at li ght lo ad co ndition to
reduce the switching and gate driving losses.
The fr equency f oldback he lps prevent indu ctor
current run away during sta rtup and thermal
shutdown provides r eliable, fa ult tolerant
operation.
By switching a t 2MH z, th e MP45 61 is ab le to
prevent EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) noise
problems, such a s t hose found in A M radio a nd
ADSL applications.
The MP4561 is availa ble in small 3mm x 3mm
10-pin QFN with exposed pad package.

Input Capacitor
The input current to the step-down converter is
discontinuous, therefore a capacitor is required to
supply the AC current to the step-down converter
while maintaining the DC input volt age. Use lo w
ESR capacitors for the best performance.
Ceramic capacitors are preferred, but tantalum or
low-ESR electrolytic capacitors may also suffice.
For simplification, choose the input capacitor with
RMS curre nt rating g reater than half of th e
maximum load current. The input capacitor (C1)
can be electrolytic, tantalum or ceramic.
When using electrolytic or tantalum capacitors, a
small, high quality ceramic capacit or, i.e. 0.1 μF,
should be placed as clo se to the IC as po ssible.
When using ceramic ca pacitors, m ake sure th at
they have enough capacitance to provide
sufficient charge to pr event excessive voltag e
ripple at input. The input voltage rip ple caused by
capacitance can be estimated by:
