Limit Switch with Auto Enable
DESCRIPTION
The MP5003 is a prote ction device designed t o
protect circuitry on t he output (V OUT) from
transients o n the input (VIN). It also protects V IN
from undesired shorts and transients comin g
from the load.
At start up, inrush current is limited by limiting the
slew rate at VOUT. The slew rate is controlled by a
small capacitor at the dv/dt pin. The dv/dt pin has
an internal circuit that allows the customer to float
this pin (no connect) a nd still rece ive a 1.1ms
ramp time at VOUT.
The max l oad at the output (V OUT) is current
limited. This is a ccomplished by utilizing a sense
FET topology. The mag nitude of the current limit
is contro lled by an external resist or connecte d
between the ILIMIT pins.
An internal charge pump drives the gate of the
power device, allowing a very low on-resistance
DMOS power FET of just 44m.
VOUT is protected from V IN being to o low or too
high. Under Voltage L ockout (UVLO) assures
that the inp ut is a bove the minimum operating
threshold, b efore the power device i s turned on.
If V IN goes above the high output t hreshold, th e
output voltage will be limited.

THERMAL PROTECTION
The MP500 3 only considers a ther mal overloa d
to be a fault . Under a fa ult condition the MP5003
will have two actions:
1) Turn off the output power device.
2) Drive the enable/fault pin to the low level.
The power device will remain off until the d ie
temperature drops below the hysteresis level.
When the die cools d own below the thermal
hysteresis l evel, the MP5003 will restart in the
start up mode and the fault line will be pulled high
through a 2 5uA pull up current. I f the cause o f

the fault has been rem oved, the o utput will ramp
up in a controlled fashion with the ramp ra
te
controlled b y the d v/dt function. If t he cause of
the fault i s still pre sent, the excess power
dissipation will heat u p the part. When the d ie
temperature reaches the thermal shutdown
temperature, the output will be turned off and the
enable/fault pin will be driven to the low leve l.
This cycle will repeat until the cause of the fault is
removed.

The drawing above shows the initial start
up
sequence a nd the occu rrence of a short at the
output.
At time T0 the input volt age begins t o rise. At T1
the input voltage rises a bove the UVLO threshold
and the part starts up. T he output current ramp s
up and settles in at the normal operating curren t
level until time T2.
There is a very sma ll
temperature heating of the d ie in normal
operation.
At time T2 the output is shorted. Th is brings th e
output very close to gro und. The output curren t
increases t o the current limit level and is held
there by the MP5003. Because of the larg e
current and the large voltage acro ss the pow er
device, the die will begin to heat up.
At time T3 t he die temperature is at the therma l
shutdown level and the part will tu rn the powe r
device off. The enable/fault pin is driven to th e
low level. Once the po wer device is off, the d ie
temperature will begin to drop.
