MP1586
The Future of Analog IC Technology
DESCRIPTION
The MP158 6 is a h igh f requency step -down
switching r egulator with a n integrated internal
high-side h igh vo ltage power M OSFET. I t
provides 3A output with current mode control for
fast loop response and easy compensation.
The wide 4.5V to 28V input range accommodates
a var iety of st ep-down ap plications, including
those in an au tomotive inpu t env ironment. A
115µA operational quiescent current allows use in
battery-powered applications.
High pow er co nversion ef ficiency over a wid e
load range is ac hieved b y sc aling do wn th e
switching f requency at li ght lo ad co ndition to
reduce the switching and gate driving losses.
The fr equency f oldback he lps prevent indu ctor
current run away during sta rtup and thermal
shutdown provides r eliable, fa ult tolerant
operation.
The MP1586 is available in a thermally enhanced
SOIC8E package.

Output Rectifier Diode
The output rectifier diode supplies the current to
the inductor when the high-side switch is off. To
reduce losses due to th e diode for ward voltage
and recovery times, use a Schottky diode.
Choose a diode wh ose maxi mum re verse
voltage rating is great er than the maxi mum
input voltage, and whose curre nt rating is
greater than the maximum load current. Table 2
lists example Schottky diodes an

Input Capacitor
The inpu t c urrent to th e step -down converter is
discontinuous, t herefore a ca pacitor i s re quired to
supply th e AC curren t to the ste p-down con verter
while maintaining th e DC input voltage. Us e lo w
ESR capacitors for the b est performance. Ceramic
capacitors a re pre ferred, but t antalum or lo w-ESR
electrolytic capacitors may also suffice.
For simplification, cho ose the input capacitor
with RMS c urrent rating greater than half of the
maximum load current.
The input capacitor (C1) can be electrolytic,
tantalum or ceramic. When using e lectrolytic or
tantalum capacitors, a small, high quality
ceramic capacitor, i.e. 0.1μF, should be pla ced
as clo se to the IC as possib le. When usin g
ceramic cap acitors, make sure that they have
enough capacitance to provide sufficient charge
to prevent excessive voltage ripple at input. The
input voltage ripple caused by capacitance can
be estimated by:
