MP1498
The Future of Analog IC Technology
DESCRIPTION
The MP1498 is a high-f requency, synchronous,
rectified, st ep-down, switch-mode converter
with built-in internal power MOSFETs. It offers a
very compact solution to achieve 2A continuous
output curr ent with e xcellent loa d and line
regulation o ver a wide input supply range. The
MP1498 ha s synchronous mode operation fo r
higher efficiency over t he output current load
range.
Current-mode operation provides a fa
st
transient response and eases loop stabilization.
Protective features include
over-current
protection, t hermal shutdown, and external SS
control.
The MP149 8 requires a minimal number of
readily-available external compone nts and is
available in a space-saving 8-pin TSOT23
package.

External Soft-Start
The MP14 98 employs a soft-start (SS)
mechanism to smooth t he output during power-
up. When t he EN pin goes high, an interna l
current so urce (14 μA) charges the SS
capacitor. T he SS capacitor voltage overtakes
the REF voltage to the PWM comp arator. The
output voltage smoothly ramps up with the SS
voltage. Once the SS voltage reaches the same
level as the REF voltage, it keeps ramping up
while V REF t akes over the PWM co mparator. At
this point, the soft-start finishes an d the devic e
enters steady state operation.
If the outpu t is pre-bia sed to a cert ain voltage
during start up, the IC will disable the high-sid e
and low-sid e switche s until the voltage on th e
internal soft-start capacitor exceeds t he sensed
output voltage at the FB pin.
The SS capacitor value can be determined as
follows:

If the o
utput cap acitors ha ve large
capacitances, avoid setting a short SS time to
avoid hitting the current limit during SS. Use a
minimum value of 4.7nF if
the output
capacitance value is larger than 330μF.
Over-Current Protection and Hiccup
The MP149 8 has a cycle-by-cycle over-current
limit that protects against the ind uctor curren t
peak value exceeding the set
current limit
threshold. Under-voltage protection (UVP)
triggers if t he FB volt age drops below the
under-voltage (UV) threshold—typically 50%
below the reference. Once UVP triggers, the
MP1498 en ters hiccup mode to periodically
restart the part. This protectio
n mode i s
especially useful whe n the outp ut is dead-
shorted to ground. Th e average short-circu it
current falls to alleviate thermal issues and to
protect the regulator. The MP1498 exits hiccup
mode once the over-current condition
is
removed.
Thermal Shutdown
Thermal shutdown prevents the
chip from
operating at exceedingly high temperatures.
When the silicon d ie temperature exceeds
150°C, it shuts down the whole chip. When the
temperature drops below its low er threshold
(typically 130°C) the chip is enabled again.
Floating Driver and Bootstrap Charging
An external bootstrap capacitor powers the
floating po wer MOSF ET driver. This float ing
driver has its own UVL O protection with a risin g
threshold of 2.2V and a hysteresis of 150mV.
The bootstr ap capacito r voltage is regulated
internally by V IN through D1, M1, R3, C4, L1
and C2 (Fig ure 4). If (V IN-VSW) exce ed 5V, U1
will regulate M1 to mai ntain a 5V BST voltag e
across C4. A 20 resistor placed b etween SW
and BST cap is stro ngly recommended to
reduce SW spike voltage.
